This book is written partly as a memorial to the author's father who was for many years a leader in every movement for the improvement of the physical and moral condition of the people of Ceylon. It is also written with a definite scientificobject. The book gives a complete account of the snakes of Ceylon, and though it is primarily a scientific work, it will also appeal greatly to the lover of nature and to the medical man. The snakes, which are of most importance from a medical point of view, are very fully dealt with, and as all the most deadly of the Indian snakes are also found in Ceylon, India medical men will find the volume not only interesting but also instructive. All the recent observations of Lamb, Rogers, A. J. Wall, Acton, and Knowles are incorporated, and the book will serve as an excellent companion volume to the author's wellknown book on the poisonous snakes of India and Cevlon. It is a pity that it is not possible in the title of the book to indicate its interest and importance to the naturalists and medical men of India. The subject of ophiology has been unduly neglected in the medical curriculum of the Indian schools and colleges. Every doctor ought to know how to recognise the more important of the poisonous snakes and how to treat snake-bite. Considering the large amount of important work done by members of the Indian Medical Service on snake poisons, it is surprising that there is so little effort to include the subject in the medical
